Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center
Girls are the fastest growing segment in the juvenile justice system (Youth First, 2017), however, programs that address girls’ needs have not kept up with this increase. Girls in the Game has stepped in with the only fitness or sports-based program available to teen girls at the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center (JTDC). JTDC programming is trauma-informed and girl-driven, meaning that teens choose leadership topics and sports most important to them. Girls participate in Leader-to-Leader Interviews with people from the business community as well as individuals with insight into the juvenile justice system. Teens are able to put vital leadership skills into practice by leading programming for their peers in the facility, as well as developing their own goals and action steps. Not only do we offer teen-centered programming in JTDC, but we also offer girls opportunities to participate with us once they leave the center.
Mercy Home for Boys & Girls
Girls in the Game now offers our Teen Club programming at the Mercy Home for Boys & Girls at their Walsh Girls Campus. Mercy Home’s Walsh Girls Campus is a residential program for youth in Chicago, where girls live full-time. We’re excited to bring our 12-week Teen Club programming to the campus!
