As the temperature goes down, Girls in the Game is getting girls’ heart rates up!

We know how tough it can be to stay active during the winter, especially when all you want to do is hide under blankets with some hot chocolate. However, making exercise part of your daily routine is key to maintaining long-term health. That doesn’t necessarily mean sprinting laps in sub-zero conditions. Whether it’s jumping jacks or a particularly active game of Simon Says, there are plenty of ways to get your heart rate up while indoors.

On Friday, February 1, Girls in the Game is encouraging girls in Chicago to stay active during the cold months at our annual Winter Day of Play. The event includes a mix of recreational and educational fun that teaches girls leadership skills and self-confidence, all while keeping them moving.

Transportation is provided, and Panda Express will be serving a free lunch. All of the action takes place indoors on a day girls have off school to ensure a warm environment free of chilly winter winds.

During last year’s Winter Day of Play, we hosted 231 girls from schools throughout Chicago, with a large group of volunteers from Johnson Controls helping staff the event. The girls spent the day rotating through sessions that included activities like rugby, floor hockey and yoga, among others. Other sessions focused on health topics, such as smart eating, healthy body image and Title IX.

One of our staff members who supervised the event, Alecia, said,

“I am so lucky that in my position at Girls in the Game, I am able to be a part of creating days like our Winter Day of Play, where all these awesome girls get to meet each other and learn from one another.”

We couldn’t be more excited to host the Winter Day of Play again this year. The event will take place Friday, February 1, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Ignatius College Prep (1076 Roosevelt Rd).

The goal of the Winter Day of Play is to encourage girls to stay active on a day they have off school and to maintain healthy habits throughout the winter months. This will also be a wonderful opportunity for Girls in the Game participants to meet other girls from schools all over Chicago.

We at Girls in the Game wish you a warm, healthy and happy winter!
