Girls' Advisory Board
The youth voice of Girls in the Game, the
Girls’ Advisory Board plans and participates in leadership and team-building activities and influences the direction of Girls in the Game.
Girls ages 8 to 18 use the skills they’ve learned through Girls in the Game programs to emerge as leaders in their communities. Girls’ Advisory Board activities include interviewing professional women in Chicagoland and touring their workplaces, leading workshops for their peers, supporting women’s sporting events and mentoring younger girls.
Girls’ Advisory Board Activities focus on the following areas:
Women Leader Interviews
Each year Girls’ Advisory Board members identify 10-12 prominent women with interesting careers, and set up interviews to discuss leadership and important issues facing girls today. Prior to the interview, Girls’ Advisory Board members research the background of the women and their profession and prepare questions. The girls educate the women leaders on important health and social issues facing girls and suggest opportunities for the women to become involved. |
|
Leadership Development
Girls’ Advisory Board members help Girls in the Game identify health issues that are important to girls and improve strategies to reach more girls. Members also join Girls in the Game staff in leading workshops for their peers, speaking at or leading activities at community health fairs and representing Girls in the Game at special events. |
|
Community Organizing
Girls’ Advisory Board members plan individual days of action and education at their own schools in celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Month. Participants not only learn to incorporate healthy behaviors into their daily lives, but to speak out about health issues, and get others involved. |
|
Girls’ Advisory Board members of high school age who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential are invited to apply for the Varsity Squad, and earn scholarship dollars in exchange for leading healthy lifestyle workshops for younger girls.
The Girls’Advisory Board is open to any girl age 8 to 18, whether she’s been involved in Girls in the Game before or not. For more information contact Rebecca Tolmach at rtolmach@girlsinthegame.org or 312.633.GAME (4263).Download the
